Background: Radial neuropathy at the spiral groove is a relatively common entrapment neuropathy of the upper extremity. Ultrasonography (USG) has proven its efficacy for the diagnosis of various kinds of entrapment neuropathies. The aim of this study is to assess the value of USG as a diagnostic method in radial neuropathy at the spiral groove.
Methods: We studied 10 healthy controls to get the normal USG parameters of the radial nerve at the spiral groove. Five consecutive patients with radial neuropathy at the spiral groove confirmed with electrophysiologic studies were evaluated using USG during the period of 1 year.
Results: In the four patients, USG showed the increase of cross-sectional area of the radial nerve exceeding that of healthy controls, confirming the diagnosis of radial neuropathy.
Conclusions: USG may be a useful diagnostic method in radial neuropathy at the spiral groove. Therefore, it can be considered as a diagnostic adjunct for this disorder.
